What does it mean to work with a Five Star Wealth Manager?
The Five Star Wealth Manager award program is based on a rigorous, multifaceted research methodology, which incorporates input from peers and firm leaders along with client retention rates, industry experience and a thorough regulatory history review.
Milwaukee Magazine, Forbes Magazine, Wall Street Journal and Five Star Professional partner to find wealth managers who satisfy ten objective eligibility and evaluation criteria, including:
- Candidates must be credentialed as an investment advisory representative or a registered investment advisor.
- Candidates must be actively employed as a credentialed professional in the financial services industry for a minimum of five years.
- Candidates must have a favorable regulatory and compliant history review.
- Candidates must have fulfilled their firm review based on internal firm standards.
- Candidates must be accepting new clients.
- Consideration is given to one-year client retention rate.
- Consideration is given to five-year client retention rate.
- Consideration is given to non-institutional discretionary and/or non-discretionary client assets administered.
- Consideration is given to number of client households served.
- Consideration is given to education and professional designations.
In order to consider a broad population of high-quality wealth managers, award candidates are identified by one of three sources: firm nomination, peer nomination, or pre-qualification based on industry standing. Self-nominations are not accepted. In recent years, only around 15% of candidates are awarded the Five Star Wealth Manager Award.

- Credentialed as a registered investment adviser (RIA) or a registered investment adviser representative;
- Actively licensed as an RIA or as a principal of a registered investment adviser firm for a minimum of 5 years;
- Favorable regulatory and complaint history review (As defined by FSP, the wealth manager has not;
- Been subject to a regulatory action that resulted in a license being suspended or revoked, or payment of a fine;
- Had more than a total of three settled or pending complaints filed against them and/or a total of five settled, pending, dismissed or denied complaints with any regulatory authority or FSP’s consumer complaint process. Unfavorable feedback may have been discovered through a check of complaints registered with a regulatory authority or complaints registered through FSP’s consumer complaint process; feedback may not be representative of any one client’s experience;
- Individually contributed to a financial settlement of a customer complaint;
- Filed for personal bankruptcy within the past 11 years;
- Been terminated from a financial services firm within the past 11 years;
- Been convicted of a felony);
- Fulfilled their firm review based on internal standards;
- Accepting new clients.
